Candidate Statements

Candidate 1, VP for Professional Development

Name: Benjamin R. Weiner

Institution: Union College

Professional Title: Residence Director

How will you contribute to the success of CSPA-NYS and its members through this officer position?

I will strive to create professional development opportunities across the state of New York in an effort to further develop our members and build strong networks from institution to institution. I will work deliberately hard to create ares that allows our members to take part in programs that further develop skill sets.

What would you identify as the top two priorities for CSPA-NYS over the course of the next 1-2 years? How would you help to address those priorities through this officer role?

1. Stronger networking programs: Provide opportunities for members to engage with through a chain of mentorship. I will develop a survey to better understand graduate students, new professionals, and so forth in an effort to provide structure for each type of professional. That way I will be able to create an organized tree of support for each of our
members and also begin diversifying their network within the organization.

2. Intentional professional development opportunities: Work alongside the board to determine which initiatives are most desired and create programs that educate our members about these topics and how they can be applied to their home institution. Follow up with a focus group to determine how these programs went and how we can improve our professional development opportunities moving into the new year.

Please describe any relevant experience (leadership roles, executive board positions) within CSPA-NYS or other professional associations.

I have worked on past committees in the professional development section, specifically focused on pairing graduate students with professionals in an effort to help them engage into the field and work on their individual skill sets.

I have also designed networking opportunities around these efforts with the Region and also setup a timeline for the pairings to reconnect and develop their relationship further.

I have also spent time implementing assistantship fairs to help find out where people want to develop and provide those opportunities at their institution or at least nearby.

Candidate 1, VP for Membership

Name: DJ Schier

Institution: Villa Maria College

Professional Title: Director of Student Life

How will you contribute to the success of CSPA-NYS and its members through this officer position?

As the Vice President for Membership, it would be my pleasure to use this position to help contribute to the continued success of CSPA-NYS and its members. Ever since I first started attending conferences and events hosted by CSPA, I have always felt very welcomed and like I was part of an amazing shared experience. I believe many other members of CSPA share that same sentiment and I believe I could use this position to help keep that feeling alive and well inside every CSPA member. I would utilize this position to help create a voice for all members of CSPA that can be heard loud and clear across all of NYS. I believe that by acting in the best interest of our members, I can help sustain that feeling for the 2 years this position will allow me to. I plan on making the best effort possible to talk to as many members at conferences and events, and really dig deep into why they continue to stay and support CSPA. From there, I will figure out what I can do to help keep that feeling going for them. Through this position, I hope to build new relationships with members and use the voting power to make sure that members’ questions, thoughts, and concerns are being addressed. I truly believe that I can help add to the growth and development of CSPA with this position and continue to make every experience we all have with CSPA one we will always remember.

What would you identify as the top two priorities for CSPA-NYS over the course of the next 1-2 years? How would you help to address those priorities through this officer role?

During my time as Vice President for Membership, I believe CSPA-NYS should focus on building community throughout the group and also continue to address hot topics and emerging trends in the higher education field. We live in the digital age and I believe that utilizing social media in effective ways can help address both of these priorities. NYS is
large and trying to stay in touch with members hundreds of miles away can be difficult, but not if we take the way we communicate to a larger group on social media, like Facebook. By creating a CSPA-NYS Group on Facebook, we can both build community and address hot topics and emerging trends. This will help to connect all areas of NYS in one easy to access location. This will help build community throughout the group, give members of CSPA a voice to express concerns, ask questions, and share thoughts. We can also use it as a resource to share information about speakers, programs, events, vendors, etc. A group would also help facilitate discussions about trends and topics as they emerge,
and not leave that for just conferences and events. We would all be able to be connected 24/7 in an environment with options for members to talk with each other, share ideas, or even find a roommate for the next conference in Corning! I do believe that creating a group like this would help address the priorities that I have identified, and I would be willing to help establish such a group.

Please describe any relevant experience (leadership roles, executive board positions) within CSPA-NYS or other professional associations.
